A sponsored recommendation is a product, service, or content recommendation that an advertiser or sponsor pays to include, highlight, or present to users.
It can appear in a comparison, shopping interface, content widget, or conversational assistant. It differs from an independently selected recommendation and from a referral that earns affiliate commission without a paid placement agreement. A recommendation can involve both sponsorship and affiliate compensation; users should understand the actual commercial relationship.
Sponsored recommendation examples
Imagine a fictional jacket brand paying for a recommendation card in a shopping assistant. The card could explain: 'Ad — sponsored by TrailCo. TrailCo paid for this placement.' The assistant should also explain which verified product features match the shopper's needs.
An affiliate-only comparison could instead explain: 'We may earn a commission if you buy through these links.' The publisher earns from a qualifying purchase without a separate payment for placement.
Sponsored vs organic vs affiliate recommendations
The payment arrangement determines what the recommendation label needs to explain.
| Recommendation | Commercial relationship | What the user needs to know |
|---|---|---|
| Organic or independent | No sponsor pays for the placement or selection. | Explain selection criteria; disclose any other material relationship. |
| Sponsored | A sponsor pays to include, highlight, or present the recommendation. | Identify the paid promotion clearly rather than presenting it as independent selection. |
| Affiliate | A qualifying referral can earn commission. | Explain the commission relationship. An affiliate link alone does not prove paid ranking. |
| Sponsored and affiliate | Paid promotion and outcome-based commission coexist. | Disclose both arrangements when they are material; one label may not explain both. |
How sponsored recommendations are paid for
Sponsorship agreements can use a fixed fee, measured delivery, a qualifying outcome, or a combination. The agreement defines the event or deliverable the sponsor pays for.
| Payment model | What the sponsor pays for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed fee | An agreed placement or campaign. | A featured recommendation for one week. |
| Impressions or clicks | Measured views or clicks. | A campaign charged per 1,000 impressions. |
| Qualified outcome | An agreed result attributed to the referral. | A commission on a qualifying purchase. |
| Hybrid | A combination of payment models. | A fixed placement fee plus sales commission. |
How to disclose sponsored recommendations
Choose wording that explains the actual payment arrangement in the audience's language. The US FTC native advertising guide covers paid recommendation widgets; its Endorsement Guides FAQ covers material connections and affiliate compensation. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and format.
Name the actual relationship
For paid placement, use a clear ad or sponsorship explanation. For affiliate compensation, explain that qualifying purchases may earn a commission. If both arrangements apply, explain both.
Keep the explanation near the recommendation
Show the explanation where the user sees or hears the recommendation, before the next action. Check that it remains noticeable on mobile and in expanded or voice presentations.
Keep claims supportable
Explain why the product fits using facts such as size, features, and price. A sponsorship label tells users who paid; product evidence helps them judge the recommendation.
AON Offers and commercial recommendations
An AI app can use AON to find commercial offers relevant to a user’s request. The app chooses how to present them and explains its commercial relationship to the user.
An offer that earns referral commission is an affiliate recommendation. It is also sponsored when a brand pays for its inclusion or prominence. The payment arrangement determines how the app should describe it.
Read AON native presentation guidanceCommon questions about Sponsored recommendation
Is every affiliate recommendation sponsored?
No. An affiliate referral can earn commission without an advertiser paying for placement or ranking. Sponsorship and affiliate compensation can overlap, but they should not be treated as identical arrangements.
Where should a sponsored recommendation be labelled?
Place the label close to the recommendation so the user sees it before following the link. For example, a shopping card can identify the sponsoring brand beside the product name.
Can a sponsored recommendation also earn affiliate commission?
Yes. A brand can pay for placement while the publisher also earns commission on qualifying referrals. Explain both relationships so the user understands what pays for inclusion and what pays for a later outcome.
